Many of his friends performed music and sang songs for this day. They even sang Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi’s “Kanpai,” and called Mr. Kimura back for an encore.

A message from Mr. Kimura’s girlfriend saying, “I’m jealous of Miranda (the name of the yacht),” was especially memorable.
“I think this is going to be the longest long-distance relationship in the world. I believe he’ll come back safely,” she said. “Let’s meet again.” Mr. Kimura gazed steadily at his girlfriend.
