Now then, for our izakaya series, we’re back in Nishinomiya-Kitaguchi for the first time in a while!
This time we went to “Za Watami Nishinomiya-Kitaguchi Ekimae,” a restaurant from the major izakaya chain Watami Group.
I go to Watami pretty often myself, but how much can you drink for 3,000 yen?
Let’s take another closer look at Watami.

Challenge Start!
First up, this.
It’s “The Malt’s draft beer, medium” (490 yen).
This is the “otoshi” appetizer.
Today it’s simmered hijiki seaweed.
They had a limited-quantity “salt-grilled saury” (390 yen)!
When you think of autumn, you think of saury.
The saltiness and the grilling were both just right, and it was really delicious.
I finished my beer in no time.
For my second drink, I went with a “Beam Highball” (390 yen).
The second food item was “yodare-dori” spicy Sichuan-style chicken (390 yen).
Apparently it’s called that because it’s so good it makes your mouth water.
It’s originally a very spicy dish, but this version tones down the heat a little, though it’s still spicy.
Naturally, it makes the drinks go down faster and faster.
For my third drink, I ordered the “Lemongrass & Ginger Highball” (390 yen) from the “Autumn Flavors” series.
It’s a highball with the flavors of lemon and ginger ale.
It’s an unusual taste, but a slightly sweet and refreshing drink.
I think it’s about time to wrap things up.
This is the “seared salmon belly sushi” (390 yen).
Instead of soy sauce, it comes topped with a sweet sauce and mayonnaise sauce.
It’s the kind of sushi you’d expect at an izakaya.
It was very good.
Thinking I could still manage one more item, I ordered “vanilla ice cream” (250 yen).
It’s a refreshing dessert to finish with.
Now it’s time for the bill.
How much did it come to this time?
Here’s the result!
3,344 yen!!
Wait, what?!
That’s way over the limit…
I miscalculated by about one item.
That can’t be right…
So I checked the itemized bill…
“Otoshi” appetizer (350 yen)…
That was it!!!!!!!
I ended up making a very basic mistake.
I had been careful about it until now…
So I’ll be even more careful from now on.
This time I ordered: The Malt’s draft beer, medium; otoshi appetizer; salt-grilled saury; Beam Highball; yodare-dori; Lemongrass & Ginger Highball; seared salmon belly sushi; and vanilla ice cream.
That was it!

You take off your shoes at the entrance before going in.
Inside, there are table seats and tatami seating areas.

It feels a bit like a semi-private room.
In addition to these, there are fully private tatami rooms.

There’s also a second floor, so the restaurant has quite a lot of seats.
