Highlights from Nishitsu’s Mambo Tunnel Walk Event on May 31 It Had a Great Turnout

☆★☆Nishitsu Event “Manbo Tunnel Walk”☆★☆
An adventure-style event where we walk around to three hidden gems in Nishinomiya: the “Manbo Tunnels”♪
The weather managed to recover from the rain, so we held only the “afternoon session”!

Here’s the route↑
We make our way along a roughly 5.7 km course, passing through every “Manbo Tunnel”♪

Off we go on our Manbo journey!

Our starting point and first Manbo Tunnel: “Otani-michi”
It’s so low that the participants can’t help but peek inside!
This is the one with the highest ceiling!? Whoa!
How low are the other tunnels going to be!?

Actually, the name “Manbo” has nothing to do with the fish called “manbo” (ocean sunfish).
There seem to be several theories, such as:
① It came from manpu (Dutch for “tunnel”), which later became “manbo”
② It came from mabu, an old pre-Meiji-era word meaning “mine shaft” or “coal mine hole,” which later became “manbo.”

The second one is the “Hiramatsu-cho” tunnel, about 2 km from “Otani-michi” and just north of the main Nishinomiya Post Office!
It’s even lower than the last one!

Still, it’s about 180 cm high. You can get through. We made it♪
By the way,
Namihei Isono (178 cm)… just barely safe
Inspector Zenigata (181 cm)… just barely out
Nuribake (300 cm)… way out

The third and final tunnel is a little farther away, so we all head along Route 2 while taking breaks♪
Great exercise! It’s also fun getting to chat with the other participants♪♪

A little over an hour after leaving the first tunnel.
At last!
We found the entrance to the final “Koshienguchi” Manbo Tunnel, which is incredibly hard to spot!
So hard to find!! lol

The feeling of freedom after coming out of the tunnel is amazing!! ( ´艸｀)

Goal!!
This final tunnel is only 133 cm high!
Apparently, that’s about the average height of a fourth-grade elementary school student.
It’s the kind of tunnel where your chances of bumping your head rise sharply once you become a fifth grader. lol

We presented everyone with a special participation prize: a “Nishitsu Original Sticker”!
