It’s not that big of a deal, but…
This is about how I tried auditioning as a vocalist.
You may have seen it in social media ads recently, so many of you might already know about it, but I tried auditioning for a place called “MUSIC PLANET.”

What Is MUSIC PLANET?
First of all, “MUSIC PLANET” is not the name of a company, but the name of a project. The operating company is Tentai Inc.
The project was planned and is run by a group of well-known music producers, with the aim of rethinking the traditional music business.
The Music Business Until Now
Until now, the music business has basically been about “selling records (CDs).”
Singers and musicians signed contracts with record companies, and the traditional model was that if records sold, the singer became successful.
However, as everyone knows, online music distribution is now becoming the mainstream. The traditional “selling CDs” model is starting to look less viable as a business. That’s why CDs sometimes come with handshake event tickets or voting tickets.
YouTube Will Be Important From Here On!
That is why this “MUSIC PLANET” project was created: to explore various new forms of music business.
They have carried out all kinds of activities, including serving as an official supporter of last year’s much-talked-about “Hibiya Music Festival,” running their own radio program and live music venue where they hold various events, and releasing videos on YouTube.
Incidentally, singer-songwriter Reiko Umehara from Nishinomiya, whom we previously featured in a Nishitsu article, also had videos on MUSIC PLANET’s YouTube channel. I was surprised when I found them too.

MUSIC PLANET “New Vocalist Discovery Audition”
Now, the thing that MUSIC PLANET is focusing on the most, or rather the main part of the project, is the “New Vocalist Discovery Audition.”
The idea is to have a wide range of people take the audition, support the singing activities of those who pass in various ways, and build excitement around the project together.
Let me say this first: passing the audition does not mean you will be able to make your debut.
Support for People Wondering, “How Do I Start Singing Activities?”
To put it simply, if you pass, you can receive support like this:
- You can be produced by a well-known producer
- They can create a song for you
- You can receive voice training
- They can take artist photos for you
- They can record your song and distribute it online
- They can make a CD for you
- You can perform live at MUSIC PLANET’s live music venue
Depending on the situation, it also seems you may be able to appear on radio programs or have YouTube videos made for you, as mentioned earlier.
Whether you use this kind of support to aim for a professional career or continue as an amateur hobbyist is up to you.

Why I Decided to Try the Audition
Because it sounded interesting.
There wasn’t any particular reason beyond that.
That said, I have mainly been involved in classical singing such as choir and vocal music up to now, so I did want to see how suited I might be to popular music.
Well, more than anything, the big thing was that there was also an audition venue in Osaka and it was free to apply…
The audition has already ended, but I’ll write about what the audition was like another time, so stay tuned.
