During emergencies, relying only on TV or smartphones might feel risky
During an emergency, you can get information through TV, smartphones, and other devices.
But when a major earthquake occurs, there may be a power outage, which means you might not be able to use your TV.
As long as your smartphone has signal, it can be very useful. But what if your battery is already low during an emergency? If the power is out, you won’t be able to charge your phone.
What if there were a way to hear timely, Nishinomiya-specific information such as “when the tsunami will arrive,” “how high the tsunami will be,” or “landslide disaster warnings”?
It turns itself on during emergencies so you can hear emergency broadcasts
That’s where the Sakura FM Emergency Alert Radio comes in.
This is a device that turns itself on during an emergency disaster even if the radio is switched off, and plays disaster-prevention speaker broadcasts at maximum volume.
In other words, just having this creates an environment where you can receive emergency broadcasts anytime. (You do need to insert batteries and keep it plugged in.)
The maximum volume is the key point: even if you place it in the living room, it’s powerful enough to be heard from the bathroom or bedroom.
It’s truly a better safe than sorry kind of product.
It will be sold for 2,000 yen excluding tax from June 1!
Until today, May 31, this Emergency Alert Radio is being sold for 4,000 yen excluding tax.
This time, Nishinomiya City has expanded its subsidy program, so from June 1, it will be sold for 2,000 yen excluding tax!
Nishitsu bought it for 4,320 yen, though (T_T)It’s fine! As long as it becomes revenue for Nishinomiya City!
We bought the Emergency Alert Radio at the City Hall shop
At Nishitsu, we bought it at the shop on the 1st floor of Nishinomiya City Hall!

(The red item placed right in the middle is the Emergency Alert Radio)
We’ll list the other shops selling it later.
The Emergency Alert Radio comes in a box like this↓ (Miyatan is sold separately)

(mediaTRY is a manufacturer specializing in disaster-prevention radios)
Here’s what’s inside and the included accessories↓

(It even includes batteries, so 2,000 yen is a pretty great deal)
By the way, I have a similar product↓

Even used, this one costs 6,730 yen, and the latest model was 16,000 yen(according to Amazon as of 2019/5/30)
We recommend Nishinomiya’s disaster-prevention alert radio, which you can buy for 2,000 yen! It’s easy to set up, too.
How to set it up (super easy)
Just follow these five steps:
- Insert the batteries.
- Plug it into an outlet.
- Extend the antenna.
- Press the ON/OFF button.
- Use the tuning dial to select “Sakura FM.”
After that, just turn it off and leave it in place.
Insert the batteries
Insert the four included AA batteries.

Plug it into an outlet
Connect the AC adapter to the terminal, then plug it into an outlet.

Extend the antenna
Extend the antenna so it can receive the signal more easily.

Press the ON/OFF button
Press the green ON/OFF button on the right side when facing the radio.

Use the tuning dial to select “Sakura FM”
Turn the tuning dial near the power button,

and once the green lamp on the left lights up and the Sakura FM lamp is on, you’re ready!!
(If the left lamp is red, it’s set to AM, so keep turning the tuning dial until the green lamp lights up.)

After that, just turn the power off and leave it as is.
One thing to note: the batteries will discharge and run out after about a year, so they should be replaced.
There was one fatal flaw
This radio does have one pretty fatal flaw.
It is absolutely not stylish.

If that doesn’t bother you at all, I think it’s fine to use it every day!
I guess expecting good design from an Emergency Alert Radio is kind of missing the point.
But if you don’t want to place it somewhere stylish, set it up somewhere a little less noticeable. (If you put it behind the TV, you might not notice when the batteries run out, so it may be a good idea to replace the batteries without question on a fixed day, like New Year’s Day.)

In closing
Rather than just one per household, if you live in a two-story house, having one on the first floor and one on the second floor would give you peace of mind. I think it would also make a good gift for grandma or grandpa.
