A “quick question for readers + results from the previous question” article series: “Nishitsu Survey (temporary)(we might run another survey to decide this name too)” 👏 Updated every Friday at 8 p.m.
(Hiratsu runs surveys too. This is a project inspired by Hirakata Tsushin.)

Calligraphy took first place, but surprisingly, no one in their 20s or younger had taken it!
Since we’re in the smartphone era and people don’t write by hand as much, maybe that’s only natural. Well, I’m in my 40s and I can barely write kanji either, though. lol
Robotics and programming didn’t show up, but I imagine those will increase going forward. (We previously wrote about Japan’s first Rubik’s Cube lesson. It’s in Kotoen.)
Stories about lessons and activities people took, or are taking
I performed in all kinds of recitals at Amity Hall!

I even won a prize in a competition.

Abacus made me faster at calculations (I reached pre-3rd dan in soroban and pre-5th dan in mental arithmetic, so I can do multiplication and division with about six digits total), swimming made me able to swim fast, piano helped me play for choir competitions, and English helped in class. Abacus, swimming, piano, and English are definitely worth doing!
Teenage girl
I was doing way too much, hated it, skipped lessons, and my mom got insanely mad at me.
Man in his 30s

Man in his 40s
It was fun.
Teenage girl
I kept going by looking forward to the candy I got when I left!

I learned ballet until my second year of high school. Now, about 40 years later, I’ve rediscovered how wonderful ballet is and started taking lessons again, but my body has gotten pretty rusty 😅
Woman in her 50s
I went to Koma Swimming, which used to be in Nishikita but isn’t there anymore. I admired how the coaches would slap the water. When I wore a Koma swimsuit to the beach, my body ended up with star-shaped tan marks.
Woman in her 40s
I used to fight with my older brother using the abacus as a weapon. (It’s a good memory now.)
Woman in her 50s
I played piano accompaniment for my class at a junior high school in the city!
Woman in her 30s
More than the lessons themselves, I loved playing with friends on the way home 💕
Woman in her 50s
It was lost in the earthquake, but I learned swimming at the heated pool at Nishinomiya Sports Center. There was a small outdoor pool too, right?
Woman in her 40s
Strictly speaking, choir wasn’t a lesson; I belonged to a city group. But as a child, it felt like a lesson. I learned only the basics of ballet when I was little, but the studio was lost in the earthquake, so I stopped for a while and restarted as an adult.
Woman in her 40s
I started Kumon as a preschooler, and by the early years of elementary school I had advanced to junior high school-level material. Back then, whenever I started a new topic, I would cry in the classroom while solving the problems. The teacher noticed and supported me, but I couldn’t go home until I finished. It’s funny to look back on now.
Woman in her 30s
I feel like standing all alone on stage at a piano recital must be quite an ordeal when you’re little. If I could play the piano, I’d probably act super cool and play constantly at places like Acta.
