Things That Changed on Nishitsu This Week

The subtle update category issue
As I wrote in last week’s This Week in Nishinomiya, we fixed the issue where adding the “subtle updates” category on PC made things creepily wrap into two lines.
Specifically, we removed some low-traffic categories from this section.
That solved it nicely, so even with “subtle updates” included, it no longer wraps into two lines!
That said, after about another month, if “subtle updates” isn’t getting much traffic, we’re planning to hold another battle for category top-page display space by showing a different category instead.
We added an access counter, but…
Taking a cue from Hirakata Tsushin, we added an access counter to the top page.

Right now, it can only be seen on PC. It isn’t showing on smartphones because of a bug (T_T)
Access counters were a must-have on old-school websites. I’m an old-internet person myself, so I wanted to try adding one.
When a repeating number showed up, people would say things like “I got the milestone number,” and the top page would say something like “〇〇 got the 7777 milestone number!”
But in the end, the count differs quite a bit from the numbers used in another system, so we’re planning to stop using it for now.
Specifically, Nishinomiya Tsushin uses an access analytics system (Google Analytics) for the monthly access ranking in our access analysis, but this counter uses a different system (some PHP thing I found somewhere), so the logic is probably different, and it ends up counting way too much.
To show how different it is: the regular analytics count was 17,834, while the access counter showed 25,329, a difference of nearly 7,000.
I thought a difference of around 10% might be okay, but this is off by 40%…
We’re looking into another method. It’s not impossible to implement a counter using Analytics, but the drawback is that it makes the display about one second slower.
It’s already December. December! That was fast.
So, ahead of Christmas and the year-end season, we’re looking for story ideas like “Wouldn’t it be good to have an article like this?” I don’t think we’ll be able to use every idea, but we’d like to try more and more of the interesting ones!
